2009 Film Info
In his award winning film, directorYojiro Takita uses the setting of a funeral parlour to tell the life affirming story of Daigo and his family. The Departures opens with beautiful shots as the director presents the “parlour” and Daigo, the protagonist, who finds himself out of work as a cellist when his orchestra disbands. Through a comical misunderstanding, he accepts work in a burial home. Motoki Masahiro, ( Winner of Best Actor , 2009 Asian Film Awards for Departures) is superb is his role as Daigo. The film focuses on how Joseph overcomes his feelings of uselessness as he enters his “real calling as a supermarket cupid”. His transition, however, does not match with that of Eliska, his wife.
“Empties began its incredible festival run at the Toronto Film Festival last year where it played to critical and audience acclaim as a festival front-runner. It went on to play at numerous festivals around the world where it garnered several audience choice awards for best feature and raves from critics at every turn. Earlier this year “Empties” won the Audience and Best Screenplay Awards at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival, and has been the biggest box office hit in Czech history.” Sedona.biz

THE HURT LOCKER
“The Hurt Locker is a masterwork of suspense.” Set in 2004, in Iraq, it puts us up close with the bomb disposal unit as they perform their dangerous and psychologically straining work within the chaos of war. Beginning with the first scene, director, Kathryn Bigelow, infuses the work with tension and she doesn’t stop.
“"The Hurt Locker" is a great film, an intelligent film, a film shot clearly so that we know exactly who everybody is and where they are and what they're doing and why. The camera work is at the service of the story. Bigelow knows that you can't build suspense with shots lasting one or two seconds. And you can't tell a story that way, either -- not one that deals with the mystery of why a man like James seems to depend on risking his life. A leading contender for Academy Awards.” Roger Ebert ( July, 2009)

AWAY WE GO
Away We Go takes us on the road… After hearing that Burt’s parents ( Jeff Daniels and Catherine O’Hara) are pulling up roots and going to live in Belgium, Burt ( John Krasinski – The Office, Shrek the Third) and Veronica ( Saturday Night Live’s Maya Rudolph) head off in search of a new home for their soon to arrive baby. Each stop along the way introduces them to new faces bringing us comedy and revelation . The film entertains with its hilarious script, but it is the amazing performances of Rudolph and Krasinski that make the film so worth the trip.

THE CLASS
Entre les Murs ( The Class) is adapted from the book by Francois Begaudeau who also stars in the film as the teacher. The film’s actors are the students ( 14 years of age) who study together in real life. Over a year the director, Laurent Cantet, observes the teacher, student and peer relationships and through the dynamics of the teenagers, explores the socio- political world.
“The film exhilarates with its lively, authentic classroom banter while its emotional undercurrents build steadily but almost imperceptibly over a swift 129 minutes… One of the most substantive and purely entertaining movies in competition at Cannes this year.”
Justin Chang
“This is one of the screen’s most rewarding explorations of the teacher/student relationship in any language.” Michael Phillips, Chicago Tribune
